It’s ok not to know
We often think we need to know everything and have all angles covered before we dare to start on our dreams. But the truth is we can’t. Uncertainty is a fact of life but victory goes to those who dare.
Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the founding Prime Minister of Singapore, was a testimony to this truth. Keep your dream ahead of you and let it be a compass that keeps pointing the way ahead even while life gets tough!

Set Back or Set Up?
We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair… We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.
I’m sure as a child all of us loved to go on the swing. The thrill of flying through the air and that rising feeling of butterflies in our tummy is one of that great joys of childhood.
And we all know the secret to the swing depends on how far we can pull ourselves back. I remember trying to go as far back as I could, as far as tip toes and stretched legs would allow! Then as far back as I was, the final factor came in how hard I threw myself forward! It may have started small, but each swing brought greater momentum and with that came greater heights!
The story of the swing holds true for our lives as well! Life will throw you set backs but it is within the power of our perspective to see it as set ups for a greater future! Here are some thoughts:
- Failure is not final
- Perspective changes set backs to possible set ups
- It’s ok to start slow and small after a fall but keep going
- Have courage to try again
Many people who are now remembered and celebrated as successes didn’t always start that way.
Thomas Edison was famously quoted for saying:
I haven’t failed. I’ve only found 10,000 other ways that didn’t work.
Dale Carnegie, a well known author said:
Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.
And perhaps one of the most inspiring examples of what Dale Carnegie said is Sir Winston Churchill, who led Great Britian through World War II. He said:
We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.
Even with the odds stacked against him, Churchill chose to see a set up rather dwell in the set backs. History is forever different because of this. Your future can be different too because you choose today to see how Churchill saw.

Feed Your Mind

The quality and healthiness of our physical growth is very much dependent on our bodies receiving the right nutrition.
In the same way, we need to nourish our minds. One of the reason many of us feel we enjoy our jobs is because of the opportunity to learn and develop our mental capabilities and skill sets.
Make an active decision to feed your mind well. Here’s some advice about what you should look for in filling your thoughts:
Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Take time to find good books to fill your imagination and stretch your minds.

Someone once said that while inspiration is important for success, it’s the perspiration that gets us to the finish line.
If you are like me, I’ve started many things but have a bad habit of not seeing it through to completion. If you play tennis, you would know the importance of this because it is the follow through on the swing that gets the ball going where it needs to.
I keep this quote as a reminder to myself to keep going because only those that cross the finish line have the joy of seeing to completion what they start on:
I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race…
So keep running your race and don’t turn back till it is accomplished!

Where Is My Talent?

“When I was a little girl, I asked my mummy what would I be? Will I pretty, I will be rich? Here’s what she said to me”
No doubt many, if not all of us wondered what we would be when we grew up. And perhaps few of us are employed as how our much younger selves might have imagined! In fact one article from 2012 claimed that 2/3 of people were “not happy at work”!

Keep Swimming

If you’ve watched the Disney movie “Finding Nemo”, you will remember a part of the story where the little clown fish Nemo is trapped with hundreds of other fish in a fishing net.
How that little fish escapes is by a stroke of genius – he gets all the other fish in the net to keep swimming down back towards the ocean floor. At first it’s difficult to cajole everyone but they get the idea and finally little Nemo and daddy are reunited!
Life often throws us those nets and we can draw two great lessons from this:
- Keep swimming, never give up
- No man is an island, we can’t succeed life alone
Here’s something worth bearing in mind.
Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
So keep moving, never give up! But it’s always stronger when we partner with trusted others to do life together.
Be All There

Often while our bodies are at our office workstations, our minds and thoughts are adrift in the seas of imaginations and dreams of greener pastures.
But a simple key is to learn to see progress in life as a series of stepping stones. We need to learn the important secret of tackling life a day at a time.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
This ancient wisdom is more than 2000 years old but so relevant for today. So here are some practical tips for daily success:
- Take one day at a time
- Make the best of each day
- Start each day or end the day with a list of priorities for the day
- Be willing to say no to what you can’t complete today
- Fix today’s problems today and leave tomorrow’s trouble for tomorrow
- Look people in the eye and take time to think before you speak
Remember we have a beautiful gift called the present and the best way to use it is to be present!
